In today's globalised world the competitiveness of companies
and the employment they can provide depend to a great extent
on research and technological development (RTD). It is also
essential for the support of other policies such as consumer
protection or the protection of the environment. But high level
research is complex and interdisciplinary, increasingly costly,
and it requests a constantly increasing "critical mass".
Attaining maximal outputs from research efforts in a
global environment calls for co-operation at different
levels, networking teams and increasing the mobility
of individuals and ideas. Taking up this challenge the
European Commission, the EU Member States and the European
Parliament, the scientific community and industry are
committed to work jointly towards the creation of a
"European Research Area" (ERA).
In addition to coordinating activities within the European
Union, the European Commission and the EU Member States
reach out to partners in third countries in order to establish
collaborative networks to discover the innovations of tomorrow.
Singaporean organisations are among the most successful third-country
participants to the EU Framework Programmes, which is reflected
in an increasing interest among EU countries to further reinforce
their ties with Singapore.
