Higher Education in Italy
Italy is a country with many facets and diversity, where art and
culture play an important role, where beauty, design, good taste and
fashion are an everyday “imperative”.
The heritage of art, archeology and architecture is one
of the richest in the world and every city and region
focuses on preserving the evidence of various civilizations
and cultures of the past..
Italian hospitality, a “know-how-to-live” and high quality
of education have made Italy unique experience and privilege
for living and studying.
With 19 Nobel Prize laureates since 1906, Italy has
a long history of academic excellence and is home to the
western world’s oldest university, dating back to 1088.
The university system consists currently of 75 universities.
Italy has played an important role in European higher
education: it is one of the four countries that first
engaged to create the so-called "European Area of Higher
Education" (Sorbonne Declaration, May 1998), thus
starting the type of higher education reform which,
known as "Bologna Process" (Bologna Declaration,
June 1999) is being implemented all over Europe.
Italy ranks among the 8 most industrialized
countries in the world.
