Dear Media Partners,
To mark the occassion of the EU-ASEAN Commemorative Summit on 22 November
2007, the European Commission has decided to create a special guide dedicated
to journalists in Singapore, with practical tips and tools for covering
news on the European Union.
This year especially is a landmark year for both Europe and
Southeast Asia. The EU celebrated the 50th Anniversary
of the Treaty of Rome in March, and ASEAN celebrates its
40th Anniversary this month. There have also been 30 years
of dialogue between the EU and ASEAN,
which demonstrates the way in which two large and diverse
regional groups can co-operate for mutual benefit.
Hence, there are many major newsworthy issues
for the local & foreign press to explore.
This guide will also benefit international news
journalists who cover the wide range of
subjects in which the EU is a world player, from trade
to humanitarian and development aid, from science to
environmental protection and from culture to agriculture.
The purpose of the guide, in addition to strengthening
journalists’ knowledge of the EU, is also to give clear
guidelines as to how to access a wide variety of news sources and
online resources for photos and audio-visual material
for use in their reporting.
Also useful is the list of names and contact details of
spokespersons in the EU institutions, and of European
representative offices in Singapore and abroad.
It is our intention to provide every support needed
in documenting and relating news about the EU to the
Singaporean public. Let us help you tell your stories.
